As a new RPN graduate, in Ontario there is a huge nursing shortage in hospitals, nursing homes and clinics. This demand is putting an increased risk for patients, because they are not getting the care that they need and deserve. If patients are not getting the care that they need this could lead to an increase in mortality rates.
The increase of hours that nurses are working could lead to 'burnouts'. This could cause nurses to be out of work, or even leaving the nursing profession altogether. In the near future, the baby boomers will be retiring soon. This will lead to a even greater nursing shortage. Nurses leaving the profession, and not enough nurses to replace them. The increase in nursing education, especially for RN's, is assisting with the nursing shortage. RN's are not graduating a quick as they were in years before. The nursing shortage effects everybody.

Interesting video. Is it Canadian or American statistics? Really puts you in perspective of the potential shortage we are about to face. Also opens your eyes to how valued we nurses really are. Good find!
